Don't ever forget that it was Peter Arnett himself in 1968 who lied his ass off and made up from whole cloth the most famous and successful anti-American propaganda of the Viet Nam war:

"It became necessary to destroy the town in order to save it."

This was the town of BacTre, pop over 30,000, which was taken by the VC in the Tet offensive, and retaken after heavy fighting a week later. Exhaustive research show that Arnett MADE IT UP. He cited and anonymous Army major, every major in the area denies meeting Arnett or saying any such thing.

That exact quote was used in WW2 in Europe, it is thought that Peter did a little creative "Cut and Paste".

This damning "destroy to save" quote did as much as 10,000 casualties to undermine American moral and support for keeping the Republic of Viet Nam communist domination and slavery.

You know, this "another Vietnam" thing is getting on my nerves, and not just because it isn't true. It's also the fact that Vietnam wouldn't have been another Vietnam if we hadn't had gutless Presidents in charge. A strike north to take out the Hanoi regime would have won the war, since it was the North Vietnamese Army Americans were fighting, not guerrillas (at least not after the disastrous--for them--Tet Offensive). To be fair, LBJ worried that China would intervene, as they did in Korea--but he could have made clear to China that that would be considered an act of war, as it was not in the Korean conflict. (LBJ knew, although the American people did not, that the Korean War had been ended not by negotiations, but by Eisenhower's threat to nuke China if they didn't make peace). Even without the invasion of North Vietnam, however, the US's heavy bombing of North Vietnam forced them to capitulate. Though most people don't realize it today, one of the principal terms of the cease-fire was the North's recognition of a non-Communist South Vietnam as a sovereign state. What caused the drastic reversal of fortune in 1975 was the Watergate scandal. With Nixon forced from office, the Republicans stayed home in the 1974 elections, resulting in the most leftist, anti-American, pro-Soviet Congress ever. This Congress cut off aid to the South, and the North responded in the predictable Communist manner: an invasion. To do such an invasion, they got their Soviet masters to arm them with more tanks than had been used in the Normandy invasion, and they overran the abandoned South Vietnamese democracy. So the real lesson of Vietnam is: don't elect Democrats to anything.

Thank you for everything you posted!

Arnet is truely 'the' 'ultimate' Devils' Advocate.

Walter Cronkite was a lier too concerning Viet Nam.

I thank historians like you for telling it like it was.

Sean Hannity said tonight that it even took Janet Reno four weeks to attack Waco.

Make that seven weeks (51 days to be precise).

You can bet that most, if not all, of these so-called reporters (truly propagandists) are of the mind that Bush is a simpleton; whereas, they are the ones who are the true idiots. They deserve nothing but scorn and ridicule from Americans. Best, don't tune in their TV shows, don't buy their papers, tune into Fox News and conservative talk radio routinely.

The rush to report gloom and doom just days ago was an obvious ploy to grasp defeat from the jaws of victory. The mainstream propagandists have lost all credibility and have no business participating in a free press in our free nation.

What our military has accomplished is phenomenal, and it's been done with humane restraint in an effort to convince Iraqi troops to surrender at the cost of American lives. Hopefully the price those heroes have paid will prove of value through future mass Iraqi desertions and surrenders that will spare the lives of many of their American brothers under arms.

My pleasure. Ann Coulter points out in her new column that in the 60s their was one monopoly source of info, the networks, but today their lies are outed and countered very fast.

And then it turned into a huge disaster.

You know, this "another Vietnam" thing is getting on my nerves...

A very good summary. Since Vietnam I've seen numerous film clips of the U.S. Embassy in Saigon being evacuated by helicopters. The reports always imply that this is the U.S. military being run out of town, when if fact, the military had left Vietnam 2 years earlier because, as you wrote, Democrats cut off further funding to help those people.

...the US's heavy bombing of North Vietnam forced them to capitulate.

For those who don't know, after just 2 weeks of B-52 bombing, North Vietnam finally decided it was time to sign the peace treaty (which they quickly violated but liberals don't seem to mind). I thought we should have continued the bombing until all NVA troops were back across the DMZ instead of the cease-fire in place that occurred. Sometimes I hate it when I'm right all the time.
