The idea is to make the enemy worry themselves to death about having a bullet in the back of their head. Basra should fall shortly, one of the shortest sieges in modern warfare.

I suspect Baghdad will become sniper central once we surround it. We can beat them without doing the house to house search.

The Brits are handy at metro warefare. I would like to know if they use the 50 Cal. sniper rifle too? I though I saw a U.S. Marine with one.

I suspect this is how the US will operate in Bagdad. Marine snipers will create a very uncomfortable enviroment for the irregulars.

You just know there are some poor Canadian snipers (PPCLI) who are spitting mad
because their government officials have kept them out of this...

Another look at the L96 A1, suppressed version

Chambered in .308 (7.62 Nato), .300 Win Mag, or .338 Lapua Mag

You can't totally suppress a highpowered rifle like the 308 or 300 winmag. You can get rid of the muzzle report but the sonic boom is still there if not directional. For real silence you have to have subsonic ammo and they have heavy subsonic ammo and rifles to fire it but, to my knowledge, you cannot load your normal caliber rifle ammo subsonic.

An absolutely beautiful firearm.
I do hope that in a few days our boys will extend to your chaps and invite to a little tea party in Baghdad. Could have a poppin' good time. Persevere!

I believe the suppression is used because it makes it much more difficult to localize WHERE the sound is coming from.
They're not trying to eliminate the sound, just disguise the location of the sniper.
