Afghanistan provides model for post-war Iraq: Daschle

WASHINGTON, April 2 (AFP) - US officials should divide the labor and expense of rebuilding postwar Iraq, modeling their efforts on the current reconstruction of Afghanistan, the top Democrat in Congress said Wednesday.
"Afghanistan serves as a reasonable model," Senate Democratic leader Tom Daschle told reporters, saying that while the reconstruction of Afghan society and infrastructure is US-led, "you've seen a lot of other countries step up to the plate."
He made his comments as US politicians increasingly focus on the postwar reconstruction of Iraq and its expected astronomical costs.
Some US legislators have noted that many members of the "coalition of the willing" supporting the US-led war to oust Iraqi President Saddam Hussein are actually net recipients of US foreign aid, and not likely to provide much in the way of financial assistance to the reconstruction effort.
While not specifically saying he advocated a United Nations role in Iraqi reconstruction, the senator said that Washington will have to "invite and involve" its allies in rebuilding Iraq.
"I don't think we can foot the entire bill," Daschle added.
At a separate briefing, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist said that although military operations in Iraq are still in full swing, planning for Iraq's reconstruction is also well underway.
"There is a tremendous amount of preparation going on," Frist said, adding "I think we'll get the support of a large number of countries."

I would have titled this, "Daschle Praises President Bush's Post Taliban Plan for Afghanistan", or something like it.

"I don't think we can foot the entire bill," Daschle added. He's really trying hard to be relevant, poor Tom, the only place I've seen this story is on Free Republic, where he is so highly admired. I am deeply saddened, deeply, deeply saddened.

Delusions of grandeur. Does Daschle think he will have anything more to say about what happens in Iraq than Chirac?

He's so irrelevant he's gotten rid of the Republican Majority Leader, Shot down ANWR, Filibustered Estrada, and Slashed the President's tax cut. I'm shocked, SHOCKED that people think he's irrelevant.

Daschle is very relavent. He is the fulcrum of Dem power in DC which means the media will make him VERY relevant.
Let's make him irrelevant by pressuring Dems and helping Daschle to a smaller caucus!
Freepers, rather than waiting to see what happens with Estrada, we need to take the lead. That means presuring Senators, special interest groups, media organizations, etc. This thread is meant to be an ongoing effort to get this man confirmed. For too many years liberals have had their way on the courts. Now, President Bush is in a position to move the courts to the right. The election of '02 showed that the country is with the President. I think it's time to let Daschle, Hillary, and Pelosi know this is Bush country. Are you with me! Let's FREEP these people.

Afghanistan serves as a reasonable model," My guess is that Tiny Tom wasn't saying that BEFORE the Afghan campaign. Wasn't he head cheerleader on the "quagmire" squad?
