he US is looking into allegations that it bombed a Baghdad Red Crescent maternity hospital, reports the BBC.
The maternity ward of a Red Crescent hospital in Baghdad, as well as other civilian buildings, were hit yesterday during an American air raid, according to Red Crescent sources and a Reuters reporter. They estimate several deaths as well as around 25 wounded; at least 3 Red Crescent doctors were among the wounded. A number of surprised motorists who were on the road at a usually (relatively) calm time (9:30 AM local) were also killed in the strikes, according to the Reuters correspondent, who reports seeing charred bodies occupying 5 destroyed vehicles.

Roland Huguenin-Benjamin, a Red Cross official on-scene, reports on CNN that damage to the Baghdad maternity hospital was the result of the blast-force of a near-by explosion. The hospital was _not_ directly hit or targeted.
