Here is the way I think it came down:
1. Centcom tells the press they have this rescued POW story.
2. Everyone calls up every POW family they can locate. No go there. Then they all call all the MIA families they can locate.
3. Someone talks to the family. They have a source outside of Centcom. They have a confirmation via Centcom. They go with the story.
They probably are ok going with the story as they did not break the embargo but rather found another source willing to give them the story now.

The military told the family Lynch had "walked into an Iraqi hospital" after going missing, but "we were told nothing else," relative Terri Edwards told Reuters. This is somewhat interesting, given that other news outlets are reporting she has two broken legs.
