U.S. Forces Secure Iraq's Kerbala, Move on
Tue April 1, 2003 10:41 PM ET
NEAR KERBALA, Iraq (Reuters) - U.S. forces have encircled the Shi'ite holy city of Kerbala with little opposition, securing all major exit routes, and are now advancing further north, a Reuters correspondent said.

Reporter Luke Baker, who is traveling with the U.S. 3rd Infantry, said commanders had expected a day-long battle to seize the city perimeter, but in the end the operation was completed within three hours.

Rather than tackle Iraqi troops who might be positioned inside the central Iraqi city, which lies some 68 miles southwest of Baghdad, U.S. forces are instead advancing further north and west, he said.

Sounds like a quagmire by Post/Times standards

And if Rumsfield didn't micromanage it would have only lasted 15 minutes.

According to the Washroom Post this would be a defeat. A victory could only be declared if we converted all the residents of the the city to liberalism.

That isn't the way it's being reported on FNC. It appears they are going to TAKE Karbala. I think they're tired of leaving thugs in their rear.

AND counted their votes from the 2000 election.

AND discovered that Al Gore had actually won due to the Electoral Votes from Iraq.

Karbala is filled with holy sites. I don't think it will be taken, just as Najif won't be taken for the same reason. I wonder if the RG has decamped to Bagdad. That would seem to be their only sensible strategy.
