NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Ford Motor Co.'s (F) U.S. vehicle sales fell 7.9% in March, with sales of cars dropping 8.3% and sales of trucks declining 7.7%.
The Dearborn, Mich., auto maker said Tuesday that total vehicle sales reached 302,463 in March, compared with 328,385 units a year earlier. Car sales fell to 115,321 units from 125,736, while truck sales declined to 187,142 from 202,649.
There were 26 selling days in March, compared with 27 days a year earlier. Ford's figures aren't adjusted for the change in the number of selling days.
The company's Expedition trucks saw sales slip 2.5%, while sales of the Explorer decreased 8.2%. Sales of the Lincoln Navigator declined 6.6%. Sales of Ford Taurus cars, meanwhile, rose 3.1%, while Ford Focus cars reported a 13% jump in sales.
"We're encouraged by our market-share gain in 2003," Jim O'Connor, Ford's group vice president of North American marketing, sales and service, said in a prepared statement. "In the first quarter, we achieved one of the largest share increases among all manufacturers and we intend to keep the momentum going."
