HERBORN -- Eight years after escaping a Hopkinton slaughterhouse, Emily the Cow, an inarticulate but persuasive spokeswoman for vegetarianism, died in her sleep early Sunday of uterine cancer. She was 10.

Officials at the Sherborn Peace Abbey, which bought Emily in 1995, praised her yesterday for promoting vegetarianism to the center's estimated 100 weekly visitors. In her eight years in Sherborn, more than 90 guests forswore red meat, many taking the vegetarian pledge after encountering the mild-mannered activist, said Meg Randa, who runs the Peace Abbey with her husband, Lewis.

The cow's life will be permanently recalled in a life-size bronze statue to be erected above the grave....

Reached for comment, Moses was less than impressed.

" .. Emily the Cow, an inarticulate but persuasive spokeswoman for vegetarianism, died in her sleep early Sunday of uterine cancer."

What, again, is the health(y)(ful) reason for becoming a vegetarian?

Isn't it something like, 'red meat causes cancer'?

Wait a minute ... I just got it!

She was made of red meat and that is why she developed cancer.

Stupid cow shoulda' been made of cheese (after a shower, of course)

The Rabbit preached the funeral. The Turtles were the pallbearers.

This is the same reason that veterinarians urge cats and dogs be spayed: a high risk of uterine cancer in old age. They should have done the same with the cow, but naw, it wasn't NATURAL. But neither is it natural for cows to get that old in the wild.
