He was seen in military uniform at a meeting of his top commanders.
It was the first time Saddam's eldest son, Uday, had been seen on video since the war began on March 20. But it was not clear when the footage was taken. Meanwhile, huge explosions have again rocked central Baghdad, sending clouds of smoke skywards around the presidential Old Palace compound near the Tigris River. Earlier, warplanes and cruise missiles pounded the same compound, targeting a palace used by Saddam's younger son, Qusay. Coalition bombers - including long-range B-1s, B-52s and B-2 "stealth" aircraft working together for the first time - pounded a string of targets in the city. The US Defence Department said the air strikes had caused "a very significant weakening" of Iraqi forces. And Iraqi commanders were moving Guard troops around to shore up their strength. Also, Pentagon spokeswoman Tori Clarke said US officials had seen evidence that members of Saddam's family, and the families of senior Iraqi officials, had tried to flee the country. When pressed for details she would not elaborate. "We have seen some reports recently and I'll leave it at that," she said.
