Lehrer's Newshour Uses Our KIAs (vanity)
Wildbill | 03/31/2002 | Wildbill

The PBS show NEWSHOUR with Tom Lehrer inaugurated a new, subtle, anti-war tactic tonight. They are showing the names and faces of our KIAs from the Iraq war in what they claim is a memorial to our war dead.

Apparently they plan to repeat the litany each day with pictures of the accumulated war dead. Imagine the corrosive effect on US morale of showing these personal pictures each day as the battle toll rises.

The media CAN defeat our noble purpose in Iraq. Remember VietNam. We won the battles of Tet in the field, but lost the war in the reporting at home.

Remember the Iran hostage "crises" where the media ranted each day about the accumulated number of days that "America Held Hostage?" Day by day, drop by drop, the poison enters the body politic.

There are honorable ways to oppose any war. But in my opinion, this is a cynical and vicious ploy to undermine the US war effort under the guise of mourning our war dead.

Does PBS need a freep? Let's get this stopped before it goes any further. Write your Congressman and your email list.

Fox has been respectful in reporting and showing photos of soldiers KIA.

"Imagine the corrosive effect on US morale of showing these personal pictures each day as the battle toll rises."

Imagine the resolve.... JMVHO

Ronald Regan was Inaugurated, the hostages were let go.

Carter held America hostage.

Carter was then, and still is, a C!$&le gerk!

Viet Nam---another Democrat Fiasco. Along with Mary Jo Kopecne.

I disagree. I read the names each day and look at pictures. How callous would it be to support the war and not honor the dead and those who loved them.I honor them.

Tom Lehrer? What happened to Jim?

PBS is Democratic; of course they want to increase anti-war sentiment.

I saw it and thought it was respectfully done. Made me proud that these warriors were fighting the good fight for me, and i told my wife, 'isnt it amazing that we will be able to individually honor our soldiers, while the iraqis will need bulldozers for their mass graves?'...

Perhaps I'm overly suspicious about the media's committment to our government's policy.

And of course they were respectful. But can you see the possible backlash if they post 1000 names after a major battle...or 22 tonight...31 tomorrow...56...76...120...?

Someday, some Congress is going to have the cajones to defund CPB and PBS. Just before the sun goes nova, I imagine.

I saw it and thought it was respectfully done.

I thought it was done in a dignified way also.

I believe Jim Lehrer served in the USMC.

I watch The News Hour with Jim Lehrer, and I have since back when it was the MacNeil-Lehrer News Hour.

They generally do a very good job. Sometimes there is a slight liberal tilt, but it is PBS. Margaret Warner is good, Gwen Ifill has issues, Jim is good, etc. Friday nights are always a highlight, with Mark Shields & David Brooks teaming up/ facing off in a weekly political analysis.

For example, Jim & the Experts (ret. colonels, I think) gave a big discussion about how the media was being too negative about the war.

I saw it too. The technique is identical to what the press used to undermine support for Viet Nam. It is clearly an effort to turn public perception against the President, night after night. PBS is is a vehicle for the leftist agenda.
