Thank you for your letter.
I would like to make clear in the strongest possible terms that the recent (March 26th, 2003) remarks by Assistant Professor Nicholas DeGenova concerning the war in Iraq were made on his own behalf and should not be taken to reflect the views of the department of Anthropology. As chair and as an individual member of Columbia's faculty I cherish the principles of freedom of speech and academic freedom. Now more than ever, we need to protect these freedoms.
However, I am deeply concerned when the academic obligations of debate and critique are sullied by sentiments that seem profoundly out of line with the values and commitments that are fundamental to academic life.
I am personally appalled by some of Professor DeGenova's remarks, and repudiate any statement wishing violence against soldiers or civilians alike. I deeply regret the offence that has been occasioned by this incident, but must note as well that I am also saddened by the violence of the language that has been directed, in turn, not just at Professor DeGenova alone, but at the department of Anthropology as a whole and our colleagues in the faculty and administration at Columbia University.

It is not a license for murder, but it is a license for treason and hate. This person will suffer no long-term adverse consequences for his hate speech. Columbia University is a nest of America-hating vipers, and that is what is taught to the students there.

Frontpage mag has an interesting story about how this guy's boss has a long history of support of radical anti military causes. (Sorry I can't find the link)
The way these guys claim to "support the troops" to deflect critisism makes me sick.

Rodney:
Didnt realize that DiGenova was not tenured. Something tells me even more that the Anthro Dept supports him more than I think....because w/out tenure it is easier to dismiss.
By the way...my attempt at satire was based on the reply letter you received, not at your letter to C-umbia. It was great that you took the time out to write the C-umbia Anthro Dpet and voiced your feelings on the matter

Some folks have commented that de Genova has no possibility of getting tenure after this, but, personally, I think Columbia University is such that his tenure possibilities actually increased after his appalling statements. Well, they won't fire him for being a crazy communist. However, Eric Foner is a real big shot on campus, and if in fact they are pissed at this little jerk stealing their limelight, then perhaps we will have trouble moving up in the ranks.

Maybe you should direct your energy to the real problems of the world, like AIDS, Homelessness, bigotry against gender confused indiviuals and the threat to the spotted owl. Don't forget second-hand smoke...

O'Reilly made this exact same point on his radio show today. Someone from the Left said the two were not morally equivalent. This speaks volumes about the Left, IMO.It sure does. Especially since it was the cultural anthropologists, DeGenova's fellow travellers, who invented moral equivalency. Cultural anthropology is a breeding ground of radicalism and malcontent, one of the bastions of political correctness at the university. Funny how much mental twister liberal professors can perform while snaking out of their own ideological knots.

Edward Said, the rock throwing Palestinian professor who was caught fudging the facts in his autobiography, also teaches at Columbia.

mmm-hm. probably accurate, if still a bit too wordy.
a shorter summary runs thusly: "screw you, baby-killer"
I do believe the prof and the department should be canned immediately.

That's right. As I recall he was also one of the guys behind the phony "october surprise" story that Reagan had bribed the Iranians, or whatever the accusation was.

Dakmar...
I took a few minutes to decipher that post, and I must say I agree with a lot of what you said.

These were the Classical liberals...founding fathers-PRINCIPLES---stable/SANE scientific reality/society---industrial progress...moral/social character-values(private/personal) GROWTH(limited NON-intrusive PC Govt/religion---schools)!
Dakmar...
Where you and I diverge is on the Evolution/Communism thing. You seem to view Darwin and evolution as the beginning of the end for enlighted, moral civilization, while I think Marx, class struggle, and the "dictatorship of the proletariat" are the true dangers.
God bless you, I think we both have a common enemy in the BRAVE-NWO.

Was just reading that article today. Here is the link:
http://www.frontpagemag.com/Articles/ReadArticle.asp?ID=6962 Horowitz most definitely has authority in this area, having been one of the founding members of the 60's era New Left movement and cocreator of Ramparts magazine. His book, "Radical Son" is a real eye-opener.

The part about the adaptiveness of the radical Left's message is a must read for everyone that gets the Spidey-sense tingling when ever they see protestors in general.

Remember that Senator's wife with the dippy peace flag/sign in their Washington house window was an Anthropology Prof too.
