The report referred to the ammo cooking off (exploding because it was on fire).

If that was true it sounds like a KIA tank.

At least one of the GW1 "lossed" tanks (stuck in the mud?) was shot by another (not FF, just for demolition purposes) in the ammo compartment, with ensuing "cookoff". It was later recovered and repaired. I can't recall precisely what the source for this info is, maybe one of Tom Clancy's non-fiction books. I'll look it up after dinner.

Into the Storm? The one he co-wrote with Gen Franks (the other gen Franks)? I have that!

But good info. So really then the M1A1 is currently WIA.

OK, the event you're mentioning is the Infamous M1A1 that Would Not Die.

It began with an M1A1 getting stuck in a salt sink near a berm.

A platoon of Iraqi tanks saw the Abrams stuck, and became brave warriors of Islam.

Two engaged at got fireballed quickly. Meanwhile, the third closed to within 400 meters, capped off some 125mm HVAPFSDS at the Abrams. The round hit the glacis...and did not penetrate.

The Iraqi tank commander, realizing that all he'd done is piss the Americans off, ducked behind the berm.

He shoulda killed his engine.

The American gunner traversed his infrared along the berm and saw the heat plume made by the Iraqi tank engine.

He then dropped down, loaded sabot, and fired. The round went through the berm AND the tank.

By this time, a recovery unit showed up. They tried to get the tank out. No luck, it was well and truly stuck. So they decided to blow it up.

The first round did nothing much.

The second round hit the turret bustle, and blew up the ammo stowage. However, the blow-out panels blew out, and the fireball never got inside the tank.

A second recovery vehicle came along, and the two working together hauled the tank out of the muck.

The crew then test-fired the main gun, and hit exactly where they were aiming.
