HINDIYAH, Iraq (AP) - Trading fire with Iraqis hidden behind brick walls and hedges, U.S. Army forces spearheading the drive on Baghdad battled their way into this town 50 miles from the capital Monday and captured dozens of members of Saddam Hussein's vaunted Republican Guard.
The street-to-street fighting at the key Euphrates River crossing was the war's closest known battle to Baghdad.
Farther south, the Army encircled the Shiite Muslim holy city of Najaf and said it killed about 100 paramilitary fighters and captured about 50 Iraqis.
Soldiers said they saw pickup trucks with children interspersed among Saddam's Fedayeen fighters in Hindiyah before the attack began in the town, according to field reports.

Wow, if this is the kind of impact we make while on a 5-6 day hiatus, just think how we'll clean their clocks when Spring Break is over!

But what about the Ho-Chi-Minh trail and the resupply routes? This quagmire has me worried.

I think the cease fire crap was nothing more than 'mis- information' purposely planted with news outlets.

Let me pose a question here to all. Is it not possible that Saddam, before the confict, put many of his most trusted and reliable units to the EXTREME edges of the defense to try to drive up the cost there and win the propaganda war?
What if in fact most of the guys we have been fighting at Basra and al-Nasariyah were in fact RG and as we get closer, we get MORE of the conscripts, not fewer?
It seems odd that the closer we get, the worse they fight.

But, but the media tells us that Americans can't fight in urban areas.

Gulf War 1991: 100 hours, 300 KIA.
Gulf War 2003: 200+ hours, less than 100 KIA.
Has anyone heard any talking head speculate on why Saddam is so UNSUCCESSFUL in inflicting casualties on coalition troops?
