Peter Arnett, Back in the Minefield - Praises Iraqi "Handling" of News Media
The Washington Post ^ | 31 March, 2003

Peter Arnett, who fought off charges of conveying Iraqi propaganda during the first Gulf War, has handed fresh ammunition to those who say he sympathizes with Saddam Hussein's regime.

"It is clear that within the United States there is growing challenge to President Bush about the conduct of the war and also opposition to the war. So our reports about civilian casualties here, about the resistance of the Iraqi forces . . . help those who oppose the war. . . .

He makes my blood boil. It seems quite obvious that Peter would prefer to stay in Bahgdad; let him.

This is my handout to establishments that have MSNBC on their TV's.

Enclosed are PETER ARNET’s comments reported on IRAQI TV:
Here he takes credit for the anti-war protest.
“In answer to your question, it is clear that within the United States there is growing challenge to President Bush about the conduct of the war and also opposition to the war. So our reports about civilian casualties here, about the resistance of the Iraqi forces, are going back to the United States. It helps those who oppose the war when you challenge the policy to develop their arguments.”
Here he encourages resistance.
“One other point. I've been mainly in Baghdad in the past few weeks. But, clearly this is a city that is disciplined, the population is responsive to the government's requirements of discipline and my Iraqi friends tell me there is a growing sense of nationalism and resistance to what the United States and Britain are doing.”
Here is he encouraging sabotage of the Iraqi people by the Regime. “Yeah, I think American policy and strategy is the weakest when it comes to the Iraqi people. The U.S. administration is concerned with the possibility of killing civilians, because the international community is very concerned about the Iraqi people. President Bush says he is concerned about the Iraqi people, but if Iraqi people are dying in numbers, then American policy will be challenged very strongly. For that reason, the Pentagon keeps saying that the civilian casualties, particularly in Baghdad in the last three or four days, at the market places -- the Pentagon says -- well they are Iraqi missiles that land amongst the people. They keep saying that, but of course the Iraqi government says they are clearly cruise missiles that hit the population. For that reason the Pentagon keeps saying that maybe it is an Iraqi missile that hit the population and not a U.S.
NOW HERE IS THE WORST STATEMENT from NBC
“After speaking with Arnett, General Electric Co.'s (GE) NBC said in a statement that "Peter Arnett and his crew have risked their lives to bring the American people up-to-date, straight-forward information on what is happening in and around Baghdad." The network said Arnett's "impromptu interview with Iraqi TV was done as a professional courtesy and was similar to other interviews he has done with media outlets from around the world. His remarks were analytical in nature and were not intended to be anything more."

Is this where your loyalties lie, the media you display is directly associated with your corporate name. Please turn the station from MSNBC as long as Arnet is paid to further his own agenda against our soldiers. Please remember that Arnet was fired from CNN because of fabricated stories about our military. I would rather view a CNN production knowing I wouldn’t be in the middle of a meal and look up to see Arnet. That I don’t think I could stomach that.

You may or may not agree with the war, but encouraging civilian casualties as a method to stop the war is not humane. Thank you for support of our troops by stopping this vile agenda.

I just cannot believe what I'm seeing in America, I'm ready to go along with total control of all media outlets during wartime, this is disgusting and it is killing US citizens !!!

My Dad is a retired Marine, and no one in the family can watch the war coverage with him - he's constantly yelling at the tv, and being a Vietnam Vet, he HATES the media.

You sound like my Dad. (Which is a compliment!)

I guess the term 'Loose lips sinks ships' doesn't apply to the US media. While the media may not be pinpointing troops they are doing just as bad with Any type of reports that may help the enemy. Whether they are feeding the anti-war folks here or building up the moral of Iraqis it should be a crime during wartime. Even the Arabs are not stupid enough to give us media coverage that we could use against them. CNN and the rest do it hourly.

Well, there is subtle retribution. If the media does endanger the war plan, or our troops, our government does have the option to "disinvite" such media outlet from their press briefings. But, I do not know if that would happen. Rummy and Ari seem to be well-prepared when handling the press corps.

A week before the war started, when Bush spoke to the press and answered their questions, he didn't call on Helen Thomas, and her seat had been moved. A historical first! (Although she does have her front-row seat in front of Ari. I think they do that for the comic relief, and for the fact that it makes the American public sympathetic to Ari, who has to answer such assine questions, er I mean, opinions.)

Also, there was another reporter that the snubbed, I think it may have been someone from the Washington Post.

I do not know that there is much more that can be done to combat the leftist media. I guess when Bush is victorious, he will be gracious to them, because he is a gentleman. The public has to remember how badly they have behaved, though. The public has to respond by not buying their newspapers, not watching their television shows, and speaking out when appropriate.

I watched the interview and as disgusting as it was, ole Pete looked like a guy whose balls were in the gloved hands of the interviewer. He was talking fast, trying to be ingratiating, like a man on high on uppers trying to please an interrogator. Stupid dupe...

Bigger Fish to fry??

The only ones i can think of are Toyko Rose and Lord Haw Haw and we settled their cases a long time ago..

During The Gulf War I, the US military wanted to debrief CNN's announcers from Bahdad, some of them refused.

Arnett reffered to CNN as The International Network ( he will never thank the men & women that gave it all for his freedom of speech ) damn him!

National Geographic and Arnett are made for each other.

About 5 years ago, i canceled my subscription after 30 years of National Geographic. The reason, they had been turning left far too much for me.

I read somewhere on FR that Hillary is a friend of Peter's ... did anybody else read that ...??

If that's true - do you think she or x42 have got their fingers mixed up in this ...??

The reason I ask, is that Peter's statements are very similar to those which the dems are spouting here. Curious??

Could it be that the Staged Anti-America propaganda we see and hear,
is really from anti-Semitic forces who now have an excuse to
show themselves again (after 60 years in hiding?)

The USA is backing Israel, and our war with Iraq sides
us against the Moslem world.

God vs. allah

Good vs. evil

You know what? NOTHING would surprise me about Clinton's involvement. I have a theory of my own, if I ever get the guts I'll post it.

lol...Post it Hildy!
I don't think you're the only one wondering about this.

Peter Arnett has been an America bashing hack going all the way back to Nam. That someone who despises America so much would become a citizen, I find strange.

Another good idea: contact National Geographic (Phone: 202-857-7000; Fax: 202-775-6141; Toll Free: 800-647-5463) and let them know you are going to try and have their tax exempt status as a non-profit organization revoked. Then contact Congressmen and Senators and complain.

Rep. Brad Sherman (D-Calif.) told the network that Arnett's comments were "absurd."

If Brad Sherman, a total liberal hack, criticizes Arnett you know it's bad.

Ahh... I forgot to mention that "TAX-EXEMPT" little item when I called - EXCELLENT - appreciate that!

Their phone banks should be keeping them busy (Nat Geo) for at least a couple of days.

You know, the tax-exemption issue keeps many organizations politically neutral (at least in public). The socialistic NP orgs don't seem to be effected - they advocate the overthrow of the gubberment and still get all the tax breaks.

"I watched the interview and as disgusting as it was, ole Pete looked like a guy whose balls were in the gloved hands of the interviewer."

Does that explain his appreciation for the Iraqi "handling" of the media?

I somehow tend to think he enjoys every second of basking in anti-American bashing.

Like the congressman said - "He had BETTER had been under duress."

As I said, he may not live long enough (due to the proper "handling" of his comrades) for us to find out.

We'll see... reporters always seem to slick themselves out from under the pile of $hit they dole out.
