The arresting gear caught the tailhook and the plane still went over the side? How did that happen?

If I were working strategy, the problem I see there is that there are sidewalks on either side of that statue. Even if it were clear when a bomb was dropped, there might be to much of a chance of a civilian walking by between the time the bomb was released, and the time of impact, and there'd be no where to safely re-point the bomb in-flight.

I'm not real hip on carrier arresting gear. The plane has hydraulics in the landing gear that may have failed and catepaulted it over the side. The arresting cable may use hydraulics to catch the plane, I'm not sure on that. Any Navy here that know?
