New Scout leaders face background checks 03/29/2003
Associated Press
TWIN FALLS - In the past, Scoutmasters were often the only adults supervising Boy Scout troops on outings.
Times have changed.
Boy Scout policy calls for a minimum of two adults to be present for all activities.
Starting Tuesday, the Boy Scout organization will start conducting criminal background checks on all new applicants for volunteer leadership, carried out by an Atlanta-based company.
Steve Nelson with the Snake River Council of Scouts in south-central Idaho says everything is being done to protect the young.

To hell with protecting the young, the predators on the left, Chuckie Schmuckie and Tommie the Commie, for example, think that it is illegal to keep all that clean young meat from their fairy friends. If it were up to the saddemocrats, there would be a mandatory faggitude merit badge.

Good idea. My son is in Cub Scouts. This was long overdue.
Unfortunately, female predators are getting a free pass. The Girl Scouts turns a blind eye to female leaders who like little girls.

This is new -- and definitely needed.

This is long overdue, yet not the best solution. Many child predators were victims themselves. If society wants to really put a dent in this problem we must institute the death penalty for pedophiles and see to it the punishment is carried out each and every time.

Good move. Sad, but necessary.
As I look back, my Boy Scout days taught me a lot about responsibility and resourcefulness and were a time of great innocence where all that mattered in the world was the next camping trip or merrit badge. Memories of those times are a firm foundation and support for living in a much more complicated and morally ambivalent adult world. A background check is a small price to pay for finding those who would rob this of children.

It is a sad lesson though - trust no one, everyone is possibly a molester or worse. Prove innocence, etc. I agree it is a necessary step and should have been done long ago, just a damn shame it has come to this.

Agreed. In a way, our troops are learning the same lesson right now. Even a benevolent-looking taxi driver or poor farmer looking at you cannot be trusted and might be out to kill you.

Actually, it is the only solution.
1) It protects the innocent from pedophiles.
2) It protects the adults from dangerous youth.
The bigger problem in this country is not the pedophiles. It is those who seek to use this issue to make 'free' money at the cost of someone elses life and/or reputation.
Never be alone with a child. It's not safe.

It's about bloody time, but even this doesn't protect from undiscovered child rapist parading as humans. The best protection is knowing your children and knowing the people they are in contact with.
Absolute and continual vigilance is the only way to keep our children safe. It's a cop out for a parent to say I just didn't know. You damn well should have known.

Boy Scout policy calls for a minimum of two adults to be present for all activities. That should be standard policy for any youth-organization.
