Sorry, I probably spoke to soon. There is a cemetary here at the site of the Battle of Franklin. I had been told all those who at that battle there were buried there. However, I am not a Civil War buff, so you are likely correct. I'll check my facts before I post next time.:)

By 1864, the Confederacy has lost a frightful amount of men so the officers to enlisted ratio was getting smaller.

The quote from the book explains it:

"It was a ghost army, something far from the magnificent force that had loomed as such a threat in better days."

Oops. Correction. Should read:

I had been told all those who "died" at that battle there were buried there.

Has any army in history lost so many generals in so few days?

Actually, yes. In the US Civil War, there was a battle where 5 Confederate generals were killed on the same day...

I was a Civil War reenactor and was called to give a presentation before a junior high a couple of weeks ago. It's not like I knew the facts except your comment made me look at the books I have.

Five of the bodies of the generals were placed on the lower gallery[porch] of the Carnton Mansion. That and the fact the town and mansion both have cemetaries probably made you think that. No problem. I really didn't know myself.

Just moved to Franklin a few months ago. I need to get over to the Carnton Mansion again and spend some time. I would like to know more about what happened there. Thanks for the facts.

That seems like a lot of "generals" to be captured. Do they make every 5th Ali who rolls in on a goat cart a general?

Correct.

General John C. Carter was wounded at the Battle of Franklin on November 30, 1864 and died at the Harrison House on December 10.

I also miscounted. That makes four General Officers displayed on the Carnton porch out of the total of six officers dying as a result of one battle, five dying on the same day.

Does France count?

Take the tour of the Carter House. It has more information on the Battle. On the wall over the upper bedroom door that faced the battle, there's a bullet hole from a minie ball that keyholed. You can see the grease grooves from the bullet.

The Carnton Mansion was used as a hospital and there's blood stains on the flooring.
Do me a favor. If you go to the Carnton Mansion, in a loud voice, call the Confederates a bunch of traitors to their country and see what happens. The last time I was there and someone said something like that, it felt like something had hit the mansion and the floors and windows shook. Thanks and I'm not kidding.

I agree with your premise that we must not jeopardize american lives and I believe the generals are of the same mind. To this point I continue to have faith in our president and his generals.

I worry when I hear people insisting we not feed the Iraqi's as long as our guys are short of rations. If a marine can't go one day without a meal we are indeed in trouble.

Agreed. I am not one of the "nuke 'em now" voices on FR and hope I didn't come off as such.

I just feel the need now and then to remind people that we don't kill people in order to save them. Not in this administration.

Just heard on FNC that, in fact, it is not true that an Iraqi general was captured.

Good news?

Perhaps -- but unless you post the whole article, I will never know!

Please don't play the stupid game of demonstrating your posting skills insofar as "excerpting" is concerned.

The whole point of FRee Republic is to gather the news in one place so we can see it on the run.

A side benefit is that we don't give the likes of the execrable CNN the benefit of all our "hits" on its site.

Best ones -- Brian

U.S. and British forces have captured two Iraqi generals and killed a Republican Guard officer in separate incidents

Are these part of the resistance we ignored?
