HOUSTON (AP) - Soul superstar James Brown donated 400 tickets to military personnel for his concert in Houston. Brown, 69, said the free tickets for Saturday night's concert were intended to give a boost to military workers as the U.S.-led war with Iraq continues.
"I grew up as a poor boy and was able to rise up and be an entertainer and help others," Brown said through a spokeswoman Friday. "I wanted to do what I could do to help our nation in this time of need."
Backed by the Soul Generals, Brown launched his current tour Dec. 27, marking performances with his signature songs, including "I Got You (I Feel Good)," "Get Up (I Feel Like Being a Sex Machine)" and "Make it Funky."

I think James Brown does this sort of thing a lot. There was a very interesting New Yorker bio article on him (July 2002, I think).

I find it hard to believe anyone understood what James said. Heck, he may have donated Chiklets to the nunnery.

"I grew up as a poor boy and was able to rise up and be an entertainer and help others," Brown said through a spokeswoman Friday. "I wanted to do what I could do to help our nation in this time of need." - Looks like an artist who appreciates his freedom and wants to give something back - what a breath of fresh air - I think I'll go and buy something of his - any recommendations?

Some may not recall, but James Brown has always been proactively conservative, and has been known to support the occasional Republican candidate for President. This latest act of his is completely within character.

James Brown has ALWAYS been supportive of our military, and our country.
"Livin' In America" was far more than any kind of lip service for him....

Time to buy some more James Brown CDs. (If you don't already have any, Live at the Apollo Vol. I is a good beginning.)
