[history]
There have been way too many vanities lately. The news forum is being overrun with them. We have been spending a lot of time moving them to the General Interest ("Chat") forum. With the increased volume we have seen with the war starting, we have been missing mail and other moderator duties, such as zots. So, here's some guidelines for vanities. Of course, there are exceptions to these guidelines. We have seen some great vanities.
Vanities are never posted in breaking news. Exceptions will be from valid news sources where breaking news is happening immediately. Such as 'CNN just reported Baghdad has been overrun by coalition forces'. Or, 'Fox reports that WMD have been discovered in Saddam's palace by embedded reporter'.
Your one line vanites, for the most part can be posted as a comment on an existing thread. If you want to post a one line vanity, post it in the chat forum. One line vanities consist of but are not limited to, 'Did you just hear that guy on KASD?'. Or, 'Does anyone know where that thread is about that women who said something about chemical weapons'. They will be deleted unless they are posted in the chat forum.
Most emails are not valid sources of news. Who knows where they originated from. They will be deleted unless they are posted in the chat forum.
Most humor threads should go to the chat forum, unless they are relevent to current events and news. Jokes and 'caption this' are also included. They will be deleted unless they are posted in the chat forum.
Freep this polls will be moved to chat depending on their revelance to current events.
Thanks for helping. Free Republic is growing faster than ever right now!
WHERE IS CHAT?
At the upper right hand side of the latest posts or latest thread, you will see a menu which looks something like this:
Campaign Central
General Interest (also known as 'chat')
News/Activism
Religion
RLC Liberty Caucus
The Smokey Backroom
VetsCoR
To post an article in any of these forums, just click on that forum, and post your article. They all work the same way.

Let's ask the guy who has the keys to the car. John, please consider renaming the 'General Interest' forum to 'Chat'.

Oh, yes please, good point. "Caption this photo" and "freep this poll" are *so* obviously things that if just HAVE to say them, you can say them in a pre-existing thread and minimize the injury to the rest of us! :D
To: FreeTheHostages
I'm not against those threads...I just think they should be moved to the "Chat" side.

Considering the RPN is approaching 1000, someone probably ought to address this issue.
To: MtHLancerFan
That's so sad. I know exactly what you're saying.

Nah, they may be OK as posts, but as a basis for an entirely new thread, I'm against them! I think they should be moved to the "Loser Thread I'll Regret Posting This" side. ;)

"Thanks for helping. Free Republic is growing faster than ever right now!"
That is true and some of the vanity is good. Sometimes it leads to other things in the following posts!
To: Admin Moderator
So if you know exactly what I'm saying, then do something about it.

I know it's probably weird but I kind of enjoy the Zots! Well, here you go, then!
Oh, did I get that right?

Thanks; it will make it easier on everyone to standardize the section to the common name, else you guys should be saying "Put it in 'General Interest."

teeheehee.....took me a while to figure some of this stuff out....
http://www.freerepublic.com/perl/profile?u=66513 This is the Admin Moderator's profile page and will explain the Zot....
bump...is like an 'amen' and sends the article to the top of the latests posts (bttt is bump to the top)
ping is when you want to alert another Freeper to the thread, you put the Freepers screenname in the reply box and ping in your reply box

Interesting, I tried to post a thread about the economic impact of the elimination of OPEC after we turn on the spigots in Iraq...didn't get moved to chat, where it could be discussed...just got "pulled".
Some people are interested in economics, particularly where this conflict is concerned.

Please be aware of individuals levelling false charges in the threads. I have seen several threads where individuals attempt to argue that others in the thread are delegitimate due to various reasons.
These people are attempting to break up your website by creating mistrust and by creating chaos in your site.
You should be doing IP logging in order to correct the problem.
