I grew up about 2 miles east of where this incident occured. As a kid growing up in the Detroit area, my parents were adamant that "nothing good ever goes on south of 8 Mile Road.." (meaning: in Detroit). As kids we were admonished never to go into the city, even though for us it was a mere 1/2 mile away. To be fair, the parts of Detroit that bordered on my neighborhood were actually pretty good areas where a lot of folks who were required to maintain Detroit residency (cops, firefighters, etc) lived.

This area of Warren, which is my home town, where this attempted robbery occured is another matter entirely. Its an older neighborhood, lot of (forgive the term) hillbillies and food stamps. Rap singer Eminem's neighborhood (where his Ebay auctioned house is located) is about 4-6 blocks from this location.

Interestingly, my parents always said "Nothing good goes on south of 8 Mile Road.." and were assidious about locking the car doors when we crossed into Detroit (even in the days before "carjacking" was a word), but as a child I found it more instructive that my mom would lock all the car doors without saying a word to us kids when we drove into this particular part of our own city.

LOL - I remember that. I lived in Southfield for a while. Actually, just a short drive north, their were lovely lakes covering the area everywhere, as I am sure you know. I wouldn't mind moving back if I could get a cottage.

Yeah, when my wife and I got married we moved into this area (8 Mile & Gratiot). Most of our neighbors were cops and firemen. We had the house broken into twice (guns, jewelry, and money stolen), fire-bombed once (dog killed), and the car stolen right out of the driveway. Our church ran bus routes in the 'bad' areas of Detroit. How much worse could it get?

Yikes! That intersection, near, is right near where my brother bought his first little house. He had lots of trouble with the neighbors. One of them used an old commode for a flower pot. That lowered property values in the neighborhood. That is an accurate description of that area of Warren.

But I'm not sure how long Marshall (Eminem) lived there. He lived on the Roseville/East Detroit border (near 10 Mile) when my brother and I coached him. I was the FIRST one to make him a star - he made the all-star team in our softball league when he was in 4th grade. I had nothing to do with making him a profane rap star. He was a quiet, shy, little kid when I knew him.
