One of the analysts on Fox a couple days ago (I think it was David Christian) said that it's standard Soviet doctrine to put these chemical barrels at the flanks of a mine field. As we approach, a tank on the other side would fire at the barrels, causing the CW to disperse. That would force us to go straight into the mines if we continued to advance.
