Everywhere! | 29 Mar 2003 | An.American.Expatriate

Good Morning.

This is the Daily Thread of Operation Iraqi Freedom - LIVE THREAD.

It is designed for general conversation about the events of the day. In depth discussion of events should be left to individual threads - but links to the threads or other articles is highly encouraged. This allows us to stay abreast of the situation in general, while also providing a means of obtaining specific information.

Please have mercy on us dial up limited FReepers! Limit the big graphics, post links instead. A breif description of what the graphic is would help:

To all who helped this get started, thank you!

Special thanks to An.American.Expatriate for staring the daily threads, Mo1 for the screamer, the AdminMods for their tolerance, mhking for the video links, and, of course, Belly Girl...

Hehehe, well I'll leave the updates to you for a while. I've got to go back into the wilderness under my bed and hunt dustbunnies.

A reply to another thread in reference to restocking the troops with MRE's. Comparing them to the C-Rations of old.

we avoided MRE's like Anthrax. We usually bought about $100 worth of junk food, and snuck them in an extra duffle bag on our way out to a FX. Spam roasting on a yukon stove is a beautiful thing.

I think the point is they announced it and for some reason wanted it announced. There is a reason for this other than the obvious. The hit to be taken in the Arab street and press is too great unless there is more behind this. At least I hope so.

I think it is very odd to make this big announcement too.

I know... maybe Jesse Jackson convinced the pentagon that his idea for a ceasefire with Jackson mediating a truce was a good idea. Surely this must be it.

Reporters are the world's greatest idiots.

LOL; THE JOKE'S ON THEM!!!! The reporters are being used to tell Saddam Hussein/Regime the "bait" (we're out here in the open, for FOUR TO SIX (CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW) days, running out of food and water........(show mercy on us poor soldiers).....and the press are such idiots, they don't even know they're being used. ROFL!

I tend to agree with your post. The administration may slip a little in the PR war. But, let's not forget, this is an ACTUAL war. I hate to say it, because it sounds made up, but I was actually thinking today, "What's the rush?" In the past few days, we've been able to take out portions of the RG simply by staying in place. I'm also not convinced that the enemy has all it's marbles upstairs when it comes to a protracted war plan.

Remember, everyone concedes that the key to this whole conflict will come down to the Battle for Baghdad. Does it make sense to bet all our chips presently, on the heels of making an historic push into this country, at the same time meeting sporadic resistance? I agree with the administration that it might be appropriate to soften them up a little more, make some Iraqi fence-sitters sweat it out a bit, and re-juice our guys/gals.

Decisive victories carry some significance, I understand. However, based on the intensity of the past week, I'm not sure I'm ready, from a battle perspective, for the risks of simply marching straight on in. We as a country made a decision from the beginning to try to liberate these people. In a sense, we're trying to protect them, so that they can experience the freedom that will come with victory.

I've not ruled out the ruse theory, either...

GOD Bless America!

One slightly off-topic post...there were a couple times when I was in Germany that local folks who lived nearby would bring us out home-cooked food while we were on FX's.

Since my job involved being FAR away from the rest of our unit, it wasn't unusual to enjoy things no one else had access to.

Like beer.

Did I say that?

One operation I was checking out this pallet on the ramp. I always liked to snoop around the pallets being offloaded from the airlift in case they was something that needed liberating.

Anyhoo, I see these nifty looking new C rats. They're in a funky gold wrapper and marked Army General somebody, VIP.

I gave the buddy who had the AT loader ready the high sign and we loaded us up one of them fine pallets of meals on our 5 ton and off we headed for camp.

Later the MPs questioned us about some hot General who had his private meals ripped off. Thank god we buried all the evidence.

one more slightly off topic... I had a buddy in Alaska, while I was serving up there, who just transferred from Germany. He was baffled the first time he went back stateside, and he couldn't add a beer to his quarter pounder combo like he could at the McDonald's in Germany.
