KUWAIT CITY, Kuwait -- A large explosion shook a downtown Kuwait City shopping mall during the early morning hours Saturday Kuwaiti time.
Television footage showed a large, billowing cloud of smoke over the city.
An official, who would not allow himself to be identified, said the explosion was heard at one of Kuwait's largest malls shortly before 2 a.m. (6 p.m. EST Friday). It was not immediately clear if the explosion was caused by a missile or if there were casualties. If a missile caused the blast, it would be the first time since the start of the war in Iraq that a missile successfully reached Kuwait. CNN reported that a missile caused the blast.

Iraqi intelligence officers have been engaged in widespread terrorist planning against U.S. interests, U.S. officials say.
State Department officials say they have information that the Iraqi intelligence officers planned terrorist attacks against U.S. interests in two foreign countries.
In both cases, a department spokesman said, the operatives were arrested, material was confiscated and the attacks were not successful.
A source cited by The Associated Press said that one of the countries where an attack was planned is on the Arabian Peninsula.
