I discovered that annoying fact under similar circumstances.
One of my cousins had a bi-racial kid (out-of-wedlock), but that's besides the point. The thing is, my grandmother, in particular, held the biracial thing against him. Even as a young teen, I found her attitude deplorable.
I have nothing but the highest respect for my dad; it must have been hard for him to rise above that.
If the majority of whites were of a religion that taught to convert or destroy us I would speak up loud and clear that I was not part of it and that I condemn it.
I would expect that anyone with human decency would do so.
My concern is this: I'm an Italian-American. Do I need to follow a litmus test to prove that I'm not a mobster, because the best-known Italian-americans were members of the mafia? Should I have to affirm, upon the demand of anyone, that I abhor the mafia?
I think I would take umbrage if you demanded that of me, knowing nothing other thant the fact I am Italian. I can only imagine that that's what an Arab must feel when he is (incessantly) demanded to prove his patriotic credentials by decrying the indefensible.
I know a guy named Samir. He does a fair amount of travelling preaching (as a Protestant Christian), so that requires a lot of airline travel. He is constantly profiled -- and he finds it quite offensive. Why? because is no more likely to be a terrorist than we are. But, because his name is Samir, and he is clearly Arabic, people single him out for scrutiny. It's understandable, but its also wrong. You're judging a man based on his upbringing, not on his character as a person.
1. While the Mafia was evil, it was not based on a central tenant of destroying our great country. Islam is. Big difference.
2. I personally have little sympathy for your friend. Why not? Because he is offended by our need to stop the insanity called Islam. I am sorry his people have decided to follow that path. Big time bummer of a situation to be in. But it is a truth that is slapping us in the face. Do you have a better solution? I feel this way because I know of no better solution.
