A (SMALL) VICTORY IN THE BATTLE FOR RICHMOND! Wednesday on the Michael Graham Experience we talked to the folks at the historic Byrd Theatre about their decision to put up two huge, car-lot sized French flags to promote their upcoming French film festival. Sure, it's not that big a deal, the Byrd is certainly free to do what it wants and the community is free to be annoyed by it, fine. But for me, a line was crossed when the Byrd's General Manager said "I'm just as proud to put up those flags today as I was one year ago [during the 2002 festival]."

It's one thing to say "I love French film." It's another thing to be PROUD of your association with the slug-eating, wine-swilling, hairy-pitted, German-fearing, Jerry-Lewis-loving, Ronald-Reagan-hating, Michael-Jackson defending, rude, smelly “I never tip when I travel to your country but will chase you down the street if you don’t tip in mine,” hated, loathsome, “we’re still listening to ABBA and think it’s cool” ankle-biting poodles of the world French.

Well, thanks in part to the listeners of WRVA, the Byrd has decided to put up an American flag with their French banners for the remainder of the festival. Their GM says it's "in consideration of the emotional response generated by the display..." Whatever it is, at least they aren't proposing a resolution to have the soldiers turn tail and run home.

In Richmond, that's progress!

If I heard correctly on M.G.'s show yesterday, the French Ambassador is coming to the Frog Film Festival this weekend. They might as well invite Yassar Arafat and Mommar Ghadafi, IMHO.

That aside, I heard Michael Graham talking to the guy yesterday. He was a major clymer. He also sent an email to Michael Graham that said "the hatred of the French is something new."

The morning host just read a list of quotes from Mark Twain ("The French government is run by prostitutes") to my favorite from General Dwight Eisenhower, "The next time there's a war in Europe, the loser has to keep France."

LOL!! I drove thru Carytown this morning and almost fergot to look at the Byrd Theatre as I was passing, but I didn't see any HUMONGOUS FRench flags...have they been removed or are they against the building or what?!

This is a meaningless little controversy really, but it'll be interesting to see how it plays out...Graham's becoming a valuable resource in illustrating absurdity in Richmond Guv'ment and Society, IMHO.
