Report: Marines wounded in fighting late Wednesday in Iraq

The Associated Press

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - At least 25 Marines from Camp Lejeune were injured during house-to-house fighting that began Wednesday night in An Nasiriyah, according to a WTVD-TV reporter traveling with the troops. Keith Garvin, reporting live Wednesday evening - about 2 a.m. in Baghdad - said the Marines were wounded over the past few hours in combat that had picked up "quite a bit in the last 10 minutes or so." He reported late Wednesday night that none of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening.

Civilians living behind a Marine camp at An Nasiriyah were seen setting up bunkers in the afternoon, and military officials "said they had heard or felt that something bad was going to happen tonight," Garvin reported.

Intelligence reports indicated 2,000 Iraqi troops were advancing on the camp, and a two-hour fight with missiles and artillery ensued, ultimately augmented by aerial bombing, he said.

Garvin said some of the Iraqi fighters were using women as shields and had given guns to children.

"Unfortunately some of the children have been firing at our Marines and our Marines have been forced to defend themselves," he said.

The wounded appeared to be in addition to 15 Lejeune Marines who have been reported injured during the Iraqi conflict. Eleven Lejeune Marines have died, nine in combat in the An Nasiriyah area and two in accidents.

Even if the Iraqis use CW, I doubt we will use nukes. It would be political suicide for the U.S. in the Middle East. But I'm like you -- the use of tactical nukes would sure solve a lot of our problems around Baghdad right now!

" Or, "maybe you can ask Saddam that question at his press conference".

Good point. Wish someone would say that to some of these journalists.

Yes, I have even more sympathy for Israel now than I ever did.

I'm glad you said that! I too have wondered if Palestinian sympathizers would watch these world events and think -- Hey, maybe the Isreali's *aren't* the bad guys after all.

Immediately after September 11th, there was a title to an article, which became an oft-heard phrase, "WE ARE ALL ISRAELIS NOW".

Sort of remind me of all the CNN "Arab street" crpa I keep seeing. Not that these Arab nuts like us to begin with but it seems to me that Christi whatever her name is just drives around in a truck with CNN on the side and all these angery Arabs are just being so for the benefit of CNN.

You know - you may be correct. This is brutal torture of women and children by the Iraqis - not the soldiers - the Iraqis.

With these tactics, our best resort might be to go to a form of gas that would disorient them or interrupt the action, so that the soldiers can take out the Iraqi forces.

Or, just go back to carpet bombing of the whole area. No point in getting involved in these battles with children.

I was tempted to enlist during GW1, glad I didn't. I wouldn't have made it to the battle field and would have had the Klintoon as my CIC. I have the utmost respect for anyone that continued to serve under him.

Christiane Armanpour is half Iranian. That might give you some context.

The Marines are the victims of godless heathans
They must defend themselves and not worry about the PR war

It would be political suicide for the U.S. in the Middle East.

Indeed. We would instantly lose every ally we ever had in the region -- most likely including Israel. Not to mention the uber-billions we would spend rebuilding Iraq after such blast, just as we did for Japan.

These incidents are barbaric; but it evidences that the war effort is seen by our enemy as being drastically effective. They are pulling out all the stops because we are doing something very right. The only thing to do ... is to keep doing it harder than ever.

I think this war will have more impact than 9/11 in that regard. Because we see much more the face of the enemy, and things move more slowly.

Not only is the nature of the islamofascist threat more apparent, but it also becomes obvious that many of our supposed 9/11 "allies" or "sympathizers" (such as France, Russia, and Germany) are in fact pro-terrorist, and have been trying to play both sides, taking advantage of our American good nature.

Then when you look closely at the moral fiber (or total absence thereof) of France, Russia, and Germany at the turn of this century, it looks alot like Germany in the 1930's. Confused, alienated, disillusioned masses scapegoating Jews (and now Americans as well) as a means of taking out their frustration at their own decline.
