The A10's official moniker is thunderbolt-2, in deference to the P-47 Thunderbolt(Best ground attack aircraft in WW2). The name Warthog is a name the crews gave the A10 because it's "less-than-sexy" looks.

The name Warthog is a name the crews gave the A10 because it's "less-than-sexy" looks. I also remember the A-10 being called just plain Hog. As in "We have a Hog inbound". It was taken to mean a Warthog or A-10.
