If our bunker busters penetrate 20 feet of concrete at a time, and Sadomy's bunker is 180 feet deep...doesn't that mean we'll NEVER be able to hit him?

Well with laser guidance it means it takes ten of them. >;)

How would you like to be 180 feet down when that baby goes off plus you have to be able to get out. Maybe he is already waiting to get dug out. The perfect end for that butcher would be to be buried alive in a grave he had people dig for him. Maybe the GI's are just making sure they have tossed the last shovel of dirt on his grave.

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelllllllll, ya kinda hafta think about it like this:

Yes.

And no.

See, the "bunker-buster" bombs can only go through 20 feet of concrete. ("Design-for press release conditions" - They really go much deeper, and how deep depends on the covering dirt, concrete, rooms, reinforcemnt, slope of the ground, etc.)

But the blast effect goes out from its penetration depth. THAT, in turn, depends on what the bomb is "inside of" when it blows up, and on how much explosive is packed in the bomb: a 500 lb bomb may carry 250 lbs of asteel and only 250 lbs of explosive.

A 2000 lbs bomb might be "packed" the other way around: 1500 lbs of high-strength sttel to penetrate deeper, but "only" 500 lbs of explosive.

However, those 500 lbs are exploding 30 feet deep, or are exploding INSIDE an enclosed bunker that can't vent" the force. Result is a crushing blow underground that can shatter walls and rocks much further away than "20 feet." Blows people parts far apart too - when it doesn't literally crush or bury their vent tunes in nearby tunnels.

Or just shock and vibrate. Consider underground eqpt: What good is a live general if his radios and telephones and crypto grear are dead because his generator is buried in the next tunnel over, or broken because their cabinet is knocked over and smashed up?

Personally, I favor the WWII 22,000 Grand Slam supersonic bombs: guided now by GPS. They could, in WWII, when dropped from prop-driver bombers, penetrate 100 feet of rock, and deliver 10,000 lbs of explosive.

Today's Air Force believes in the fuel-air-explosives (which obviously can ONLY explode ABOVE the ground), and wants to buy those, so they turned my ideas down.

Drat.
