Good Morning.
This is the Daily Thread of Operation Iraqi Freedom - LIVE THREAD.
It is designed for general conversation about the events of the day. In depth discussion of events should be left to individual threads - but links to the threads or other articles is highly encouraged. This allows us to stay abreast of the situation in general, while also providing a means of obtaining specific information.
Please have mercy on us dial up limited FReepers! Limit the big graphics, post links instead. A breif description of what the graphic is would help:
Special thanks to null and void for keeping these running over the weekend and Monday, to all of you for keeping these threads alive, the AdminMods for their tolerance, mhking for the video links, and, of course, Belly Girl...

Perle? Oh no!
It must have to do with his private financial dealings with defense-related firms. It's been building, but I had no idea it had gotten this series.

Hello, I just got back from work and have had no news all day
Can someone update me as to what the newss has been today?
To: Miss Marple
When do they rotate back?
To: TonyInOhio
I'm betting it was the 101st, which was sitting in Kuwait until last night.
IIMEF is still a bit of a mystery. But I tend to agree with the Jordan theory.

Doesn't this figure - CNN poll, 41% on the East Coast support the war, 72% in the Midwest support it.

trveling all day,,anything happened.Havent seen tv or anything. two of my flights wre canceled for troops

A single veto is enough. The shocker was that both France and Russia were going to veto.
Which makes sense with the French oil deals (possible nuclear materials) and Russian military equipment in Iraq.

If you get a chance, check out
this link on mine info. I can't recall, but was Gen. Brooks calling those Sumer mines a type of influence mine? This link may have some info, not to mention a list of contestants for the third country to hopefully be named later. And I'll see if I can find anything else.

Great summary in this Weekly Standard article about all the handwringing going over how long the war is taking.
Consider the greatest military collapse of modern times, the infamous French fold at the start of World War II. Germany invaded France on May 10, 1940, didn't get to Paris until June 14, and didn't get a French surrender until June 22. Even the French--the French!--were able to hold out for 44 days. If Saddam prolongs the fighting for another 5 weeks, all he will be doing is rising to the level of military competence set by France.
Today is Day 8 of the war. Let's try to keep some perspective
A LITTLE PERSPECTIVE, PLEASE!

Each Council member has one vote. Decisions on procedural matters are made by an affirmative vote of at least nine of the 15 members. Decisions onsubstantive matters require nine votes, including the concurring votes of all five permanent members. This is the rule of "great Power unanimity", often referred to as the "veto" power.
Got it now....out of the 9 votes needed to pass a resolution, 5 of them have to be from the permanent members.
all caught up now.
To: Miss Marple
I would add that France's veto (like their share in governing Germany) was purely a matter of courtesy.
We decided for poltical reasons to play along with the fiction that DeGaulle and his followers, rather than the fascist collaborators actually running the country, represented the "real" government of France after it fell to Germany.
To: Ophiucus
72% in the Midwest support it. Like there's a big surprise.

Okay, I am gone for the day... might be back later if I get a chance (that cats are starting to hold up little signs, "Please clean the house!" "Please feed us!"). If I don't get back, everyone have a great night!!
To: merrin
You are quite correct. France got a "courtesy" membership.

Two flights cancelled for troops? Wow.
In brief - Northern front now re-enforced by the paratroopers ready to go, Central and Southern front have an additional 15,000 troops at hand, 7th Cav still in contact with the enemy, Baghdad was blasted again, more troops are being called up, humanitarian aid is slowly starting from Um Qasr, the big battle hasn't started yet, and Blair is extremely angry of the POWs that were executed.

28 KIA
18 Missing
7 POW
?? Wounded
Anyone know British numbers? These are the latest numbers released...
To: Ophiucus
thanks,,any news of when battle for baghdad will be joined?
To: merrin
So we're assuming that France and Russias continued opposition of the war is due their financial involvement in Iraq?
since I'm on a stupid question spree..here's another.
Congress has not declared this a war...so why is everyone calling it one? And does congress have like 90 days to do something..as far as declaring it a war or not?
To: Miss Marple
Actually it was to shut De Gaulle up and stop him from stamping his feet, pouting, sniveling and whining. It was about the only way the other allies could shut him up.
