A couple of megatons hidden in the hold of a COSCO ship berthed at the new LA facility would take out a big chunk of Southern California. Do you seriously believe that they would NOT do so?

It would take out a SMALL chunk of Southern California.

And, just out of idle curiousity, what, EXACTLY, would China gain in return for detonating a thermonuclear bomb in Long Beach? What price would they pay in exchange?

In short, please give us a coherent theory of victory for the Chinese in the scenario you describe.

If a nuke was to blow up in a US port, what are the chances we would be able to tell exactly where it came from?

Victory? I don't think so. But an opportunity to hurt a nation they perceive as an enemy, with plausible deniability (how do we prove that it wasn't Islamofascist terrorists) would be appealing to them.

Kind of like the street punk who vandalizes vehicles because he resents the "rich" owners. If he's not caught, he's "won", but he's won nothing.
