Actually, Frum has been both a social and economic conservative all his adult life. He lit up Novak and Buchanon not for being anti-war, but for using arguments against the war that are patently anti-semetic. I have to say, I have to agree with Frum. I read Buchanon and Novak regularly and in the last 18 months or so they have to some extent become unhinged.

As a somewhat impartial third-party observer who sympathizes with both the neo-con and paleo-con camps I would like to tender a couple of observations.
Firstly, the Frum piece was written in response to a J'Accuse style article written by Pat Buchanan who implied that neo-conservatives around President Bush were showing more loyalty to Israel than America. This is a highly inflammatory accusation.
Secondly, Frum and Goldberg were very trenchant and effective commentators against the corruption of the Clinton administration. I don't recall people on Free Republic wanting to drum them out of the conservative movement at that time.

"When you realize that someone in your own political camp has taken your own principles and perverted them beyond recognition, the appropriate emotional response is sadness, a grim sense of necessity, and a determination to be fair.
That's also the spirit in which sane men approach the prospect of starting a war.
Instead, too often, the self-anointed members of a given "mainstream" movement (whatever it is) respond with an ugly glee."

I'm just sorry "unhinged" doesn't begin with "in" so I could have added it to my list.
