"When you realize that someone in your own political camp has taken your own principles and perverted them beyond recognition, the appropriate emotional response is sadness, a grim sense of necessity, and a determination to be fair.
That's also the spirit in which sane men approach the prospect of starting a war.
Instead, too often, the self-anointed members of a given "mainstream" movement (whatever it is) respond with an ugly glee."

Secondly, Frum and Goldberg were very trenchant and effective commentators against the corruption of the Clinton administration. I don't recall people on Free Republic wanting to drum them out of the conservative movement at that time.I am not familiar with this Frum, except as to seeing this essay and one earlier on his apparent approach. If the essayist is correct, and he did try to purge more traditional Conservatives, he is a largely disruptive force, who should be given very little encouragement. That he may have been useful in exposing personal corruption of a particular "liberal" administration, hardly gives him credentials beyond that usefulness.
While Trent Lott was hardly a Conservative bulwark, his Thurmond comments were at least nostalgicly conservative. If Frum took umbrage at them, I would take umbrage at Frum. If the lead essayist is correct, Frum is little better than a silly snit, with more impudence than reason, who deserves the comeuppance being applied.

I have to agree with Frum. I read Buchanon and Novak regularly and in the last 18 months or so they have to some extent become unhinged. I think you misunderstand me. I completely agree with Frum, and was commenting on the Pat/Raimondo/Rockwell coalition of crackpots.
I'm just sorry "unhinged" doesn't begin with "in" so I could have added it to my list.

If Frum's original article was in response to Buchanan, then what is Brimelow, vdare.com and Gottfried doing in it?
I do like one of Zmirak's points, some conservatives will never be happy until they can condemn another conservative for not being liberal enough.

I consider Lew a screwball. I don't know what he thinks of me.
To: The Irishman
The lone wolves Frum presumes to exile serious, flinty, sometimes wrongheaded and mostly crotchety, unclubbable thinkers such as Peter Brimelow, Lew Rockwell, Paul Gottfried, Sam Francis, Pat Buchanan, and Justin Raimondo have each added far more to the stock of interesting arguments on the Right than Frum ever will. Policy is about governance - funding public safety and acquiring, building and maintaining infrastructure. In the grand scheme of things, it isn't about creating "interesting arguments".

"-- there are many many of these clowns who hate America, and certain Americans.
I just can't get past their obsession with race."

"Their obsession"?
-- You are delusional as to who actually 'hates America'. - If anything, the socalled paleos you slander err on the side of too much devotion to our constitutional republic.
Nope, it's your communitarian neo-'conservatives' who need watching.

Man, thanks for the post. When the Frum article first hit the fan, at least one long time FReeper got so upset he penned an embarrassing OPUS and resigned from the site.
This is truely a circular firing squad worthy of the democrats. There is such a thing as taking ideology too seriously.

You "more traditional conservatives" can take a hike.
Every time you're pandered to, we take further electoral hits.

"...the Frum piece was written in response to a J'Accuse style article written by Pat Buchanan who implied that neo-conservatives around President Bush were showing more loyalty to Israel than America." The Buchanan article in question can be read in its entirety here. The most damaging material in the article are the direct quotes from past writings of Perle, Wolfowitz, Ledeen, Abrams, et al. Their vision of what America's role in the world should be is the most "highly inflammatory" aspect of the story.

Take heart! The Dems have no viable party anymore.
The right has all the ideas now.
The old leftists are getting pushed out because their ideas have been proven wrong for 50 years.
The right has all the good debates!

Indeed, domestic policy should be about governance - funding public safety and acquiring, building and maintaining infrastructure, etc.
Unfortunatly, you communitarian neo-'conservatives' insist upon passing 'social' schemes that directly violate our constitution.
In the grand scheme of things, this must be discussed by creating "interesting arguments".

You "more traditional conservatives" can take a hike. Every time you're pandered to, we take further electoral hits. And just who is "we" supposed to be? You need to step back, carefully read what you write, and ask yourself just whose associations you are trying to dictate. Frankly, you are delusional if you think that anyone else is going to let you dictate with whom they may associate. And if by "we," you have some particular group of self-styled "Conservatives" in mind, just what could be more absurd than your suggestion. If the self-styled "Conservative" want-to-be, seeks to distance himself from the real deal, he exposes himself as something anything but Conservative.

Too Jew for you?! Getting ugly now aren't you!? Are Novak and Gottfried "too Jew" for you too?
To: sinkspur
If anyone is obsessed with race these days it is you. Take a nap and stopping checking under bed for racists every five minutes. You are beginning to sound like Al Sharpton!
To: Akron Al
Idiots like Frum and Goldberg make it very difficult for me to support the war.I didn't support the idea of the war or the rationale for the War. But we are in it now and an early victory and end to it is my hope. I trust you agree.
Thanks for the reply.

Read Frum's diary today. I will if you tell me where to find it.

One wonders just what the agenda is of those who are so determined to bait fellow FReepers.
