You must all remember, PLEASE, that in 1864, AFTER Vicksburg surrendered and AFTER Gettysburg, the northern anti-war press was calling for Lincoln's head; and after Cold Harbor were screaming for Grant's removal.
No offense, but given what happened at Cold Harbor, they had a pretty good point.

Yah, and amazingly, it was Grant's second experience. He sent men to a similar attack at Vicksburg, but at least he learned after two mistakes.
