I noticed on your homepage you're a professor at Penn State serving a sabbatical in Taiwan. It's great to hear how the war is being replayed around the world . . . especially from a voice I can trust. I don't know your politics, although being a FReeper might give it away a bit (LOL), but I'd rather hear from a semi-leftist American abroad than one of the BBC correspondents.

LOL. As an aside, I usually check my spelling for any word over five letters because I type quite poorly. When looking up "correspondent" on Atomica -- a great free service, by the way, for any who need to quickly look up a word and don't want to leave their current URL -- here's what I found . . .

Today, there was a reporter giving a dispatch via satellite phone to MSNBC. He was professional, and decked out in desert BDUs and gear. From the side, a hand gently patted him on the back, and he smiled and nodded. The reporter then said:

"The first sergeant says we have to move now (OK John..I'll wrap it, let's go!). We are moving now, so I have to go."

You are all correct---this experience is already having a profound impact on newsrooms and cable outlets--as well as print media. Did you read the story about the reporter in Newsweek who almost got killed, and then decided to stay with a unit from now on? He even said his photographer was "rescued by fellow Americans."

This is a far cry from the journalistic traitors that claimed in interviews they would allow Americans to die before they would "compromise their news sources."

When this war is over (and it will end, I assure you, with our victory) these men and women who were embedded will return to New York, Los Angeles, London, and Washington DC and tell stories at cocktail parties to the ones who stayed behind....and I bet 99% of them will not tolerate allegations by their fellow newsies that our brave American, British, and Aussie troops were out there killing civilians with wanton glee or mongering for Iraqi blood.

They will look at the liberals in the newsroom and say: "Wrong! I was there."

I am remembering Jim Lacy from Times mag. He was the reporter embedded for CNN at Pa camp in Kuwait. Within hours of the attack, he was refuting the anchors that he (whatever his name is, I forget) did not do it out of resentment, but because of his Muslim religion.

This, despite denials by the military brass, is panning out to be true.

I hope the embedded reporters signed a contract that they could not be fired when they return to their jobs. LOL

Oh, more BBC nonsense today. They're playing big this supposed bombing of a marketplace. They get a professor from Baghdad University on the phone and, of course, he's talking about how this makes Iraqis want to fight the US, blah, blah, blah. Now, they *know* that he's not going to say anything else, because to do so would mean the death of him and probably his family.

Believe it or not, during an interview by PBS NewsHour, a New York Times reporter in Bagdad (Foster, I believe is his name) stated there was much anticipation of the arrival of the American troops by the Iraqi's -- anticipation that they would soon be free from Saddam's regimed. The NewsHour interviewer appeared stunned.

The New York Times reporter was John Burns. He was on again, tonight, on both PBS and ABC. He was astonishing. Tonight on PBS he had reservations on the Iraqi government's contention that a missle caused the civilian casualties in the marketplace, stating the crater did not look like a bomb crater (too small). On CBS he spoke how the civilians on the scene at the marketplace blast treated the western journalist with no animosity, even shaking the journalists hands when they learned the journalists home countries.

We need to learn more about John Burns. He is not your typical New York Times reporter.
