10 Marines Based in N.C. Killed in Iraq

By ESTES THOMPSON .c The Associated Press

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (AP) - The U.S. military deaths in Iraq include at least 10 Marines who were stationed at Camp Lejeune, a base spokeswoman confirmed. Most of them died in the ambush near An Nasiriyah, the Pentagon said.

U.S. officials have said nine Marines were killed near An Nasiriyah on Sunday when one Iraqi unit indicated it was giving up, then opened fire when the Marines approached. U.S. military sources said about 40 were wounded.

On Tuesday, the Department of Defense said seven of those killed at An Nasiriyah were stationed at Lejeune. It identified them as Sgt. Michael E. Bitz, 31, Ventura, Calif.; Lance Cpl. David K. Fribley, 26, Lee, Fla.; Cpl. Jose A. Garibay, 21, Orange, Calif.; Cpl. Jorge A. Gonzalez, 20, Los Angeles; Staff Sgt. Phillip A. Jordan, 42, Brazoria, Texas; Lance Cpl. Thomas J. Slocum, age unknown, Adams, Colo.; and 2nd Lt. Frederick E. Pokorney Jr., 31, Nye, Nev.

Two Lejeune Marines were killed in accidents, the Defense Department said. Lance Cpl. Eric Orlowski of Buffalo, N.Y., was killed by an accidental discharge of a .50-caliber machine gun, and Sgt. Nicolas M. Hodson, 22, of Smithville, Mo., died in a vehicle accident.

The Lejeune spokeswoman, 2nd Lt. Kate VandenBossche, said she did not have details on the circumstances of the 10th death of a Marine stationed at the base.

Relatives said Orlowski was a reservist who was on his first deployment. He called his mother, stepfather and 3-year-old daughter, CamerynLee, in Buffalo just 10 hours before his death, according to the girl's mother, Nicole Kross.

``He was always there for his daughter, and he loved her more than anything,'' Kross, an Air Force reservist, said of her high school sweetheart.

In Missouri, friends said Hodson graduated in 1999 from Smithville High School, where he had played basketball and track.

Principal Wayne Krueger described Hodson as ``the kind of kid that everyone knew and everyone liked.''

The deaths, executions, and torture of US troops is known to the soldiers in combat.

It's now "shoot if there's any doubt and don't be taken prisoner; they'll kill you anyway."

I expect things to change drastically in Iraq in the next 24-36 hours.

What do you expect when you go into a medieval hell hole like Iraq?! Oh yeah...I forgot that Freeper party line: it will be a cakewalk and the Iraqis will take to democracy and the rule of law like a fish in water. Yeah right!

This war is only spreading us thin and undermining our national defense. Freepers used to understand this when they properly opposed Clinton's war in Kosovo. Why the heck are they surprised?

Congrats on the stupidest post of the day. And your ignorance is surpassed only by your judgment of placing it on a thread memorializing those who have given their lives in defense of our country. Truly pathetic.

My sister works at the Marine Federal Credit Union at Camp LeJeune. She called me crying last night. She personally knew most, if not all, of these heroes.
