Did McCaffrey just say that the 51st Division commander who had surrendered had gone back into Basra to command the defense?

We can't be that inept.

So what does this mean -- we've encountered sufficient resistance to change the rules of engagement?

Wesley Clark. Those we told to "go home" went into Basra to force us into urban fighting which Saddam knows we do not want to do.

Actually, the "commander" of the 51st that surrendered to us was really a junior officer trying to get better treatment. The real CinC was still in Basra with most of the 51st. Apparently many of these are loyal Saddamites.
