Good Morning.
This is the Daily Thread of Operation Iraqi Freedom - LIVE THREAD.
It is designed for general conversation about the events of the day. In depth discussion of events should be left to individual threads - but links to the threads or other articles is highly encouraged. This allows us to stay abreast of the situation in general, while also providing a means of obtaining specific information.
Please have mercy on us dial up limited FReepers! Limit the big graphics, post links instead. A breif description of what the graphic is would help:
Special thanks to null and void for keeping these running over the weekend and Monday, to all of you for keeping these threads alive, the AdminMods for their tolerance, mhking for the video links, and, of course, Belly Girl...
TOPICS: Breaking News; Foreign Affairs; War on Terror

You put a thermite grenade on the main rotor gearbox which is made of magnesium alloy....the aircraft goes up like a roman candle........bright as the sun..THAT WOULD WORK!
I was wondering how a thermite grenade could destroy a helecopter. You just answered my question.

Yes, they met back in either the Ford admin, or sometime in the early 80's.
But we never sold him chemical weapons. We did support him against Iran some, so did the Soviets...it was a cold war thing.
That doesn't make today's mission any less important. Only to the left it does when they have been in bed with Stalin, Mao, etc.

"That would be in-fir-red.Nah.
Infrared is what you use to see heat sources through smoke and haze, or at night.
In-fir-red is what Santa Claus wears as camoflauge in a pine forest.
... and In-fire-d is what a Smokey the Bear wears in a pine forest.

True enough...I sure hope that front seater (gunner) was zeroing every thing out. I just thought it was odd that it took so long to getting around to destroying the acft. Seemed odd. Maybe they could put a loaud speaker on there that broadcasts the call to prayer before they smoke it :)

Fox - Rick Levanthal reporting that they've stayed in one position. Two to three dozen howitzer rounds fired (155mm). Doesn't know any more about injured soldier. Saw some CH-46's but doesn't know if they're for the medivac.

Highly pissed off horde of Kurds bent on decades worth of payback with SF to your north.
US Marines and Ghurkas to your south.
Airborne and Rangers somewhere waiting to pounce.
B-52s carpet bombing your positions 24 hours.
Not looking real good for the RP folks.

Rick Leventhal checking in on FOX
updating on firing going on, though it is paused right now,
firing large cannon rounds a few miles down the road

Laurie said his batallion has seen the most action so far. Rick said the guys are getting tired, having to just catch sleep when they can

For some reason.....I forget the reason, alot of the Helicopters have gearboxes made of that...at least all the Cobra's, Kiowa's and Blackhawks in my unit were. We lost about 4 cobras in Gulf War I due to brown out during hover, they flopped on their side and proceeded to burn like a giant arc welder.......

Well I think it's possible Saddam is alive. But not running the show. Probably in a coma. Otherwise he would have been on TV immediately after the first strike doing the "Na na na na na ya missed me" thing, and would have again been on immediately after getting some of our guys.
Alive, but DEFINITELY out of commision
