LA SLIMES' NOTABLE OSCAR QUOTABLES -- NICOLE KIDMAN ON ONE SIDE... AND FR'S "RONDOG" ON THE OTHER!
LEFT ANGELES SLIMES

Posted on 03/24/2003 1:59:50 PM PST by AnnaZ

So I finally start going through, page by page, the Oscar coverage in today's Slimes (that's right... still reading  it so that you don't have to). And then I almost had a heart attack.

The "E"/"Calendar Part 1" Section is dedicated to Oscar coverage, E1 starting it all off with a big pic of Best Actor winner Adrien Brody smooching presenter Halle Berry and the beginning of the story.

Following it in to E2 and E3, there are a bunch of huge picture of various winners from the night, the top of each page prefaced with a huge bold quote.

On the left side (heh, heh) is one quote:

"Why do you come to the Academy Awards when the world is in such turmoil?
Because art is important."

Nicole Kidman, accepting the best actress award

On the right side (in more ways than one ;^) is another quote:

"If John Wayne was here, he'd be doing what we're doing.
He'd be supporting the troops."

Ron Smith, demonstrator at Hollywood and Highland

CONGRATULATIONS, RONDOG!!! You ROCK!!!

Iraq was a very progressive nation...

Nice use of the standard Leftie euphemism. Progressive, yes! Like Cuba is "progressive", Soviet Russia during Stalin's reign was "progressive", North Korea is "progressive". We've heard that tune before, and you clever Commies just keep changing the lyrics!

You misunderstood me, I was only speaking of Nicole Kidman's remark. I will not apologize for my geopolitical view of the world, as an American. And, I do believe that any culture has the right to dictate what type of expression that they deem appropriate. In fact, I view very little mainstream television, and Hollywood movies, because I do not agree with their message.

I can understand why cable news checks with the Pentagon before airing their coverage, only because there are men and women whose lives are at stake. I also believe the Pentagon was deadly serious when they warned journalists who are not embedded with troops that the situation is extremely dangerous, and that they are on their own.

I do worry about the cradle of civilization being bombed to smithereens. And, sadder still, the loss of artifacts will not just be in the museums in Bagdad, but in the archeological artifacts in the countryside, as yet hidden or undiscovered that will be lost forever, do to the war. But, I think history shows us that the people who are responsible for these artifacts must protect them, or they will be destroyed by others, for one reason or another. It isn't like Saddam Hussein cares much for the historical artifacts, unless he gains his position in history. He is an egomaniac.

I do not believe in bombing by democracy. The shape and form of Iraq will change forever. I have no better answer for the situation in Iraq than others. I do know that the Bush doctrine warned the world that this would happen. The writing has been on the wall for awhile. Saddam could have exposed all of his WMD's, fled to exile, and we would have left the Iraq alone. If no one else in the world will remove the Butcher of Baghdad, it falls on the Americans to remove him. You may not like it, but it is a reality. Tell me now that you want Saddam to remain, or that the Taliban should have stayed, too? The Taliban's destruction of the Buddhas was an affront to civilization, not just Buddhists, throughout the world.

Finally, I believe that art is not as important as life. Art cannot exist without life. My hope is that art will flourish in Iraq and Afghanistan, now that human diginity, basic supplies, and education have an opportunity to revive the spirit of the people. Art is a gift given to man, by the creator, and we can use it wisely, and beautifully at the same time. And remember, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and many priceless works of art have been destroyed by war and evil in the past. Your view of history determines whose fault you think that is.

Like what? Crucifixes in urine?

If that's what you think of when I state the word "artist" then I feel sorry for you.

...Ask yourself what you would do if a another country tried to "liberate" the US...

From the Clinton regime, for instance? Well, now that you mention it, where the hell was Canada when we needed them??

As to why she comes to awards shows "when the world is in such turmoil," Kidman said: "Because art is important ... and because you believe in what you do, and you want to honor that. It is a tradition that needs to be upheld, and at the same time, you say there are a lot of problems in the world. Since 9/11, there has been a lot of pain, in terms of families losing people and now with the war families losing people. God bless them."

If that's her entire quote then I have to say I agree with Nicole Kidman. Maybe I am her after all.

Really..Israel is wispering in the ear of Bush that they want Syria Lebanon and Libya...do you read???

Yeah, I read. But I don't read lips and I've never seen a country talk let alone whisper in someone's ear. I bet that makes the lip reading extra difficult. You have quite a talent.

The context of this thread, you might not have noticed, is about Hollyweird. You know, the anti American crowd? When "art" is brought into this thread, I assume you mean "art" as from the Leftist point of view.

Perhaps you should reconsider the sewage that comes from the Left Coast and feel sorry for yourself.

To think I wrote off a really thoughtful and coherent response to Happyaquirrel, trying to explain my position, and stop getting flamed, only to find they have been banned now, and cannot enjoy my response! What a waste of my time!

"Maybe they liked being tortured" Squirrel said that? Good grief, that is such a predator thing to say. The last big fight I had with a liberal on FR ended with that same argument on a different subject (maybe a child molested by a gay enjoyed it -- grrr...blood still boiling). Lefties are truly sick people.
