Silvan Shalom: Entire region will benefit when Saddam is disarmed

Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom said the entire region, and not just Israel, would benefit from Saddam Hussein's regime being disarmed.

Shalom said there is "no need to prove" Hussein's capabilities, since he has already used chemical weapons in the past against Iran and the Kurds.

He said Hussein has already shown he is capable of conquering other countries, as he did in Kuwait, and therefore Iraq's Arab neighbors would gain stability from Hussein being disarmed.

Shalom was responding in the Knesset to a motion of no-confidence in the government submitted by Balad. The Labor Party and Shas withdrew their motions because of the war against Iraq.

Shalom blasted Balad for failing to "unite" with the nation during the war.

Balad MK Jamal Zhalka responded to Shalom by saying that "all nations in the region should be disarmed." Balad's motion was easily defeated.
