More deaths from mystery illness

Doctors are hunting the cause of the illness A Vietnamese nurse has become the latest person to die after contracting a mystery virus, bringing the worldwide death total to 22.

The illness, known as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome or SARS, had already killed another Vietnamese nurse and a French doctor working at the Vietnam-France Hospital in Hanoi.

All three are thought to have been exposed to the virus after treating an American businessman admitted with a flu-like illness in February, who later died in hospital in Hong Kong.

A male health worker from the Hanoi hospital is under observation in Tourcoing Hospital in north-west France, suspected of having SARS

We might well find that the disease, or the agent that causes that disease, has been around for a long time

Dr John Mackenzie, World Health Organization News of the latest cases comes as a World Health Organization (WHO) expert claims the condition could have existed, unnoticed, for many years.

Dr John Mackenzie, an Australian virologist, told AFP news agency: "We might well find that the disease, or the agent that causes that disease, has been around for a long time, but we haven't recognised it previously.

"You don't know it's a new disease, really, until this cluster of cases occurs as an epidemic."

Global alert

Hundreds of people are thought to have been affected by SARS across the world.

The head of Hong Kong's hospitals, Doctor William Ho, has been taken to hospital with symptoms of pneumonia.

A spokeswoman said it was not yet known if Dr Ho was suffering from the illness.

The WHO has issued a global alert, the region's tourist industry has suffered and sports events have been cancelled because international players have refused to attend.

For the people of Hong Kong, the latest news about Dr Ho - whether or not it proves to be the syndrome - will heighten fears that the virus is spreading more rapidly than previously thought.

Four schools have been closed in Hong Kong and nearly 200 children have been told to stay at home because members of their families are known to be affected.

Teams from the WHO have been despatched to China, because the illness is thought to have originated there.

But as yet, there is no cure. And although scientists in Hong Kong have isolated the virus that causes the illness, they are still a long way from developing a vaccine.

SARS suspected as Hong Kong medical head falls ill .

This guy may have been exposed to the disease before it was realized what precautions needed to be taken to avoid infection. Have any medical staff been infected in countries that the disease has spread to more recently, like Canada and Australia?

To the best of my knowledge hospital staff outside of Hong Kong, Vietnam, and Singapore remain SARS free. However hospitals are closing in Canada, Vietnam, Singapore and Hong Kong due to Sars...

I just heard on radio in D.C. (WTNT, I believe) that the case in Loudoun County, Virginia is expected to fully recover.

The son of a woman in our church died at the age of 34 from a pneumonia-like virus in either North Carolina or North Dakota (I don't know which.). I wonder if this was the culprit. It's scary.

He was in the service and he may have been. I don't know too many of the details.

Me thinks the CDC is in denial. If someone doesn't do something ecomonically drastic in the very short term-it's going to me a lot worse in the medium term. Just my two cents.

Thanks for the link:

DR. GERBERDING: The information we have right now in terms of spread to health care workers and close personal contacts is very consistent with a naturally transmitted pathogen of some nature.

The situation in Hong Kong in the hotel, where there were so many people infected by being in this particular area at the same point in time is also consistent with having a source patient or a source individual who is a very good transmitter of the pathogen, but we are keeping an open mind about terrorism, especially given the time that we are operating in, and I can assure you that the Hong Kong Health Department has engaged law enforcement officials there and the full cadre of epidemiologists and experts to make sure that we're not leaving any stone unturned in identifying the ultimate cause of the problem.

I have seen claims that they are putting known cases in isolation, and they recommend people do not travel to infected countries. But Canada's Dept of Health is saying travel to Hong Kong is "low risk". Go figure.
