That is an extremely misleading title you put up for this thread The page must have changed since my posting. I have no control over that. You will find a good link to a second source for the quote at post 31.

As I recall, but am a bit fuzzy on, Turkey did the same thing at the start of WWI in about 1915 or 16. They vaccilated between supporting the Germans and Britain until they basically got everyone mad at them - they ended up supporting the Germans but were an unreliable ally to them.
Anyone remember details?

For those who'd like a recent example of Turkish stupidity...after the Gulf war...the French were part of the ONW operation at Incirlik. After a couple of years, they decided to leave. They weren't going to take their little Peugot trucks with them. These were small 4-cylinder vehicles and cheaply made. The Brits on base were going to make use of them and there was a short agreement made to simply hand them over...it wasn't worth shipping them back to France. So the deal was...the French leave on Thursday, give the keys to the Brits, the trucks were going to be in the French locked parking lot overnight, and the Brits would show up the next day to move them out. As the Brits arrived the next day...the trucks were all gone. The Brits couldn't believe it...stolen on base? And then a minute later, they noticed one going down the base street, and then another....driven by Turks. The Brits went to the Turkish commander and asked what the heck was going on. The commander responded that the vehicles were no longer required and that Turkey was taking control of them. The Brits said that they had a formal agreement...and the Turk said....he knew of no such agreement, and if it did exist, it didn't have the consent of the Turkish government. Most of the trucks were broke within one year....the Turks never had any money to fix the French vehicles and couldn't get any parts for them. They simply were dumped into the junk yard as each broke.
As for the dear Turks...their understanding of Americans is very limited. There is not a single war between the American Revolution and Kosovo...that we didn't have a plan B. We are different from almost every society on the face of the earth in that we have a plan B or we will simply play it by ear. While the British and the Australians are close...we are simply the plan B society. Anybody that thinks we can be sidelined and made incapable...has watched CNN too much and believes their garbage.

This is eloquently true! Thanks!
