Correct me if I am wrong, but I think the Russian help has to do more with the fact that Saddam's regime is a long-time client of the Russians and owe them lots of money.
For someone who fights Islamic fundamentalists, Saddam sure does have a lot of ties with them.
Besides, if the Russians were smuggling this stuff in humanitarian shipments, they were violating the oil for food program. AND, what Islamic fundamentalists was Iraq fighting THIS YEAR, in JANUARY?

Speaking of Russians, please check this one out:
"In need of a surgeon to save his life, Saddam Hussein's aides have sought help from Moscow, according to the British daily The Sun.
The paper cited a senior UK government official who said British intelligence intercepted a message Saturday suggesting that Saddam is still alive in a secret hideaway in Baghdad but requires medical intervention the Iraqis cannot provide."
