Political Suicide

Tony Blair has sacrificed his political carrier for us. He’ shown such integrity I’m eternally grateful to Britain. This is no small measure. Does any one have a link to TB and those in the BP that support the US?

A true show of gratitude is in order.

I don't know of any but I can tell you this...the 1000+ people at the Times Square Rally today showed their appreciation with signs and chants of "Tony, Tony!"

Tony Blair was driven by his conviction, that it was the right thing to do, and has had many slings and arrows his way, why else would Tony Blair do this? He has shown great leadership and courage.

As I recall, Winston Churchill committed about the same sort of political suicide after the conclusion of WW II, when his job seemed to be to preside over the dismantling of the British Empire. Inspiring in wartime, he was seen to be too much of a "wild man" in 1946, and was turned out of office. The world has difficulty remembering the name of his successor, but Churchill stands alone, a colossus astride the gulf of time. Perhaps that shall be the fate of Tony Blair as well.

Churchill will have company in Heaven when Blair passes along (in the far future).

I wouldn't be so quick to write Blair off. I suspect this war will be far, far more popular in retrospect and those that supported it will benefit politically. Right now it may look like political suicide for a liberal like Blair to support this war, but I'll bet he'll be sitting pretty after it's over.

I love America. The recent treatment of our POW’s has moved me beyond words. Thus, the support we have received from Blair has moved me to a blood-like relationship. He and his supporters have my heart and alliance.

And I intend to do so. I wrote to him after 9/11, he has been GREAT through this entire war. It removes ANY doubt that might have been planted by the lefties in my mind that we are doing the right thing.

And, as the Washington Times noted the other day, the Tories are standing shoulder to shoulder with him, and for them it is, absolutely, political suicide.

This is why Blair and the Tory Pary were "Nobles" of the day at the Washington Times.

Sorry, old chap. Tony Blair's private life is flawless. Tony respects women, he even caters in many ways to his assertive wife. William Jefferson Blyth Clinton and Tony have now parted the ways. Tony can " see them off " yet. Cheers.

He was a "third way" cultist like Bill, triangulating his way into power by coopting key parts of the conservative agenda.

But in the matter of Iraq, Blair has redeemed himself by showing unflinching moral courage of historic, world-changing proportions. If hereafter I should ever attend an event at which he speaks or is introduced, I will be the first to my feet in a standing ovation.

In general I think we have the wrong idea here. He did the right thing, period. No discussion, politics be damned.

That is what our politicians are supposed to do, no matter the cost to their "political" future. It shows that Blair is actually concerned about the moral implications of his actions over the relativistic polling implications. Politics should come second to doing what is right. It is simply because most of the politicians in this world (and especially to the left side of the isle) don't do this, AND try to live as "politicians for life" that we have this problem.

I don't think Tony has committed political suicide. If the Iraq war goes off without any major disasters, he may be unassailable. His party may lose some of its loonier left, but that's hardly a downside - they can just move more into the center and pick off some of the Tory and Liberal Democrat vote.

I heard an interview on my local radio station here in Philly with talk show host Michael Smerconish interviewing Rick Wakeman. Wakeman, a die-hard Maggie Thatcher fan and a Torie, conceded that Blair is likely a lock for reelection and he even (reluctantly) gave Blair kudos for his leadership and his courage.

Wakeman has been asked by the Tories to stand for election to Parliament but Rick says he will pass for now, although he eventually would like to stand for election to the European Union parliament.

(For those who don't know, Rick Wakeman is keyboard player for the rock band, Yes.)
