Years ago, when I was a dungeon master, I once introduced a party of players to a very polite evil cleric. To describe him, I said that if we were making a movie, he'd be played by James Mason. The responses of all the players were along the lines of, "Oh my God, We're in deep trouble."
The man did urbane and menacing at the same time, long before there ever was a Hannibal the Cannibal.
