I heard a report on Fox or CNN, can't remember which - I'm flipping all over the place - that the Tornado's IFF was inoperative. Can anybody confirm that?

Someone on FOX suggested that the RAF's plane may not have been emitting the signal that it was friendly aircraft-- a malfunction, possibly. The retired colonel said that that particular airspace was extremely busy between our aircraft, Brit aircraft, our missiles, and Iraqi missiles.
