I read some articles about Joe's first run for the US Senate in Connecticut, against a pro-choice Republican, Lowell P. Weicker, Jr., who had held his seat for eighteen years. The race was extremely close and Joe's people decided to court to the strong, pro-life Catholic voting bloc in the state, a group not pleased with their Republican-in-name-only Senator.
A meeting was arranged between the candidate and Archbishop Whealon of Hartford. Joe pledged his support for the pro-life movement, and persuaded the bishop to arrange meetings between the Democratic candidate and Catholic priests across the State shortly before the election. With the help of the Catholic Church, Joseph Lieberman defeated Weicker.
A spokesman for Joe Lieberman denies the whole thing, claiming that Joe made no promise of support for the pro-life movement, and that the meetings did not occur as stated by the Church. On one side we have Joe Lieberman, on the other side, the Catholic Church of Connecticut and officials from the National Right To Life Committee who attended a few of the fabled meetings. I know who I'm believing here.
