CNN reports that Marines sufferring heavy casualties in Nasiryah. Apparently they were ambushed.

The British plane's IFF (the signal that IDs it as friendly) was not on. That's why it was shot down.

A British Air Force Tornado jet has been shot down by a US Patriot missile.

It was the first reported incident of "friendly" fire since the Iraq war was launched four days ago, British officials said.

We are taking responsiblity for the mishap. The Tornado jet didn't have the proper identifing singal, therefore it was unidentified, so it was shot down. Horrible accident
