Someone here posted today that Saddam referred to the timing, not just the date, of the initial raid in his TV speech. Does anyone know if this is correct? I have been unable to find a transcript on the web. It seems now fairly clear that that was Saddam on the tape, so the question is, was that a canned tape with a dubbed-in date reference, or was it made after the bombing? Mucho contradictory stories out there on what happened, on the tape, who was in the bunker, etc.

I think this is correct.

He did make a reference to an attack. OTOH, it would not take a Rocket Scientist to figrue out that you should pre-record a speech with such a reference to the day that Bush set as the deadline. The probability of an attack on that day was extremely high and Saddam surely realized that.

But it was supposedly more specific -- something about being attacked at the time of morning prayers. That's what I would like confirmed, or disconfirmed.

that night, someone made a post with a good point: it was indeed a tape, a rehearsal for the actual live speech that was supposed to be made later. that's why he wore the glasses and read from the paper copy. after the attack, all they had available for release was the rehearsal tape. not my theory, but this was the best idea I saw posted that night.
