You are basically making my point for me, because if I can believe what you say, nothing Jackson said in the film made for compelling or effective story telling. A good story should be uplifting and life reinforcing. G&G was not.

But he wanted the war carried to northern soil. That didn't go very well, did it? You're basically saying that the writer was pretty unfamiliar with what might induce a favorable response in the audience.
