Yeah, that's why I said it was implicit.

An implicit statement is implied or understood. At the time of Jackson's death, he could not have understood a future event that had not yet occurred.

But he wanted the war carried to northern soil. That didn't go very well, did it? You're basically saying that the writer was pretty unfamiliar with what might induce a favorable response in the audience.

Jackson died before it occurred and therefore had no way of knowing how well it would go or not.
